PRAYER ROPES

Our prayer ropes are handmade by the nuns of our mother convent, the Convent of the Holy Angels, in Greece.

Prayer ropes began to be used among monastics as early as the fourth century, particularly among the Desert Fathers and Mothers of Egypt, Palestine, and Syria, as a tool to help them concentrate on what is known as the Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

According to tradition, Saint Pachomios founded the first monastery in Thebes, Egypt, in 320 AD with the help of Saint Anthony the Great. There, the monks practiced inner prayer, but the devil tried to hinder them. An angel then appeared to Saint Pachomios, showing him a prayer rope and how to tie it so that each knot forms nine interwoven crosses, symbolizing the nine groups of angels. This method is still used today.

A prayer rope also serves as a reminder to pray constantly when worn as a bracelet and provides protection at home or in the car.
